“I am an Authlete”
(Powered By Gordon Institute for Human / Sports Performance)
From Coach Price:
Prior to Johnny and Mason entering my life I never thought I’d be working with kids or adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders in my professional world. I’d never been exposed, on any real level, to people with autism and had zero experience with handling the nuances of it professionally. When Pam and Polly approached us about training their boys I was slightly apprehensive and nervous. I took it on as a challenge, an opportunity
to grow as a professional and a chance to serve and help. Now, a year and a half later I’m so grateful for this experience. Johnny and Mason, and the relationships we’ve forged, have opened my eyes to a wonderful and worthwhile cause. I had no idea of the profound impact these two guys and their families would have on me and my fellow coworkers. Mason and Johnny challenge me to be a better coach and a better person on a daily basis. I’ve grown in many areas and ways, such as patience, effective communication and better observational skills, due to the time spent working with these two inspirational people. Watching Johnny and Mason grow together as friends, improve their coordination and develop their skill set in sports and athletic endeavors has been incredible. I have developed a passion for coaching them and for devoting time to the autism community. This has led to me to want to use my strength and conditioning background to help in any way possible. I want to train individuals with autism using sports performance techniques and provide a unique service that seeks to develop coordination, strength, skill, balance, social skills, friendships, teamwork and leadership. The autism community needs people to step out of their comfort zones and offer opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise exist. That’s what my team and I have done Gordon Institute or Human/Sports Performance; and we will never look back. This entire experience has been a blessing.
Thanks,
Josh Price

TESTIMONIALS & OBSERVATIONS
” I have seen the relationships between our Authlete’s and our coaches Josh and Christine, grow. They seem to love what they are able to accomplish through each session. They’re playing sports which help them understand many facets of competition, sportsmanship and friendship. They’re gaining many skills, such as hand-eye coordination while gaining strength at the same time.” – Michael Kelly, Director of Sports Performance/Fitness/Post Rehabilitation

Our boy’s and girl’s off season lacrosse sessions conclude this week. Beginning back in October (’11) with the 1st Annual Elite Faceoff Clinic, and continuing on through early Spring, our lacrosse specialty training and coaching sessions were a rousing success. On the boy’s side we offered a “Holiday Faceoff Camp” and three full sessions of our “Faceoff Boot Camp” and two full sessions of our “Shooters Touch” programs. On the girl’s side we were pleased to add a full session of ‘Women’s Lax Skills & Drills”. Players ages 9-18 attended, representing seventeen different programs, teams and clubs from around our area.
The Gordon Institute thanks all of the players and parents for their patronage and extends a special THANK YOU to our fantastic coaches -
Greg Furshman (Stevenson University), Taylor Marino (UMBC), Brandon Hastings (Goucher College), Erin Stewart, John Conley, RG Keenan (UNC), Bob Keenan, Dave Allan, Bryan Kelly (Calvert Hall), Frank Kelly (Calvert Hall), Ben DeFelice (Towson University),

Where were you this past Saturday? If not at the Gordon Institute, then you missed the BEST Fit Club Game Day yet!
Five events led the way towards a main event – the “Grand Finale”. 35 total Fit Clubbers participated, split into five respective teams. 10 helpers were responsible for spotting the events, taking pictures, recording video, and making sure things ran smoothly. Another 20 or so spectators showed up to support their friends and family. The “Opening Ceremonies” began with a motivational speech from President & CEO of the Gordon Institute, Eric Gordon. Following the opening remarks, a live draft took place, where the five teams systematically registered each person from their team for the event of their choice. Simon followed the draft with a beautiful acapella rendition of the National Anthem, which brought the facility to life and got the blood
pumping.
All ready to begin, the music was pumping, the atmosphere was intense, and the butterflies were flying. Each event was mentally and physically challenging in its own way. The events came to an end, the scores were tallied and the BLUE TEAM aka “Winning” was crowned as overall Game Day 4 Champions. It was an incredible morning, one that will go down in the Fit Club record books. It was an “Instant Classic”! The bar is raised and Game Day is on a new level. I look forward to coaching everyone and watching all the tremendous progress all of you are making. Each and every Fit Club member makes this a rewarding and valuable journey. GAME DAY 5 is right around the corner…will you be ready?
See You Soon,

LEARN MORE ABOUT RICK DEMPSEY…

Rick Dempsey, Former Baltimore Orioles Catcher & MLB Coach
Coach Dempsey was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee and played for 24 seasons as a catcher in Major League Baseball from 1969 to 1992, most notably for the Baltimore Orioles. Dempsey was known for being one of the best defensive catchers of his era.
Dempsey was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 15th round of the 1967 Major League Baseball Draft out of Crespi Carmelite High School. After two seasons in the minor leagues, he made his major league debut late in the 1969 season for the pennant-winning Twins managed by Billy Martin, however he didn’t qualify for the post-season roster. Dempsey spent a few more seasons shuttling between the Twins and their minor league teams, before being traded to the New York Yankees in October 1972. During his tenure with the Yankees, he served as a reserve catcher to Thurman Munson, and received tutoring from Yankees coach and former catching standout, Jim Hegan. After three and a half seasons with the Yankees, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in June 1976, where manager Earl Weaver made him the Orioles’ starting catcher.
For the next ten and a half seasons, Dempsey would remain as the Orioles’ starting catcher. He became known for his exceptional ability to handle pitching staffs, his strong throwing arm, and for his agility behind home plate. In 1979, the Orioles defeated the California Angels in the 1979 American League Championship Series to reach the World Series. In the 1979 World Series, the Orioles won three of the first four games against the Pittsburgh Pirates and seemed to be on the verge of winning the championship, when the Pirates, led by Willie Stargell, rebounded to win the final three games. It was one of Dempsey’s greatest disappointments of his playing career.
The highlight of his career came in 1983, when the Orioles won the American League Eastern Division pennant, then defeated the Chicago White Sox in the 1983 American League Championship Series, before winning the 1983 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Dempsey posted a .385 batting average along with a .923 slugging percentage in the five-game series, and won the World Series Most Valuable Player Award, one of six catchers to have won the award.
In 1987, Dempsey became a free agent and signed a contract to play for the Cleveland Indians. After only one season with the Indians, he became a free agent once again and signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he would be a member of another World Series-winning team in 1988, this time as a back up catcher to Mike Scioscia. While playing for the Dodgers in 1990, he became involved in a brawl with Phillies’ center fielder Lenny Dykstra, who took exception to Dempsey’s fraternization with the home plate umpire. After three seasons with the Dodgers, he played one season with the Milwaukee Brewers, before returning to the Baltimore Orioles for his final season in 1992.
His sense of humor during his playing career was renowned, and he was famous for his “rain delay theatre” performances, in which he emerged from the dugout in stockinged feet onto the tarpaulin covering the infield during a rain delay and pantomimed hitting an inside-the-park home run, climaxed by his sliding into home plate on his belly on the wet tarp, all to the raucous delight of the soggy fans. He sometimes did this while wearing a pair of underpants over his uniform, making fun of teammate Jim Palmer’s famous advertisements for Jockey brand briefs.
